I am looking for a watercolor artist who signed his painting Vilkauskas. He did, or does, mostly seascapes. He displayed and sold his art at the New York City Village Art Show in the late 1950's and early 1960's. I have what I believe is a print of a watercolor. It is signed "E. M. Ashe", and "-89-" appears below the signature. While searching the name on the internet, I found E.M.Ashe mentioned on sites on which out of print books were being sold. He was listed as an illustrator of three such books, dated between 1901 and 1905. I have no idea how to tell if this piece of artwork is a numbered print, or if it was a mass produced copy. If someone could explain how to tell, I would appreciate it. But mainly, I would like any information possible about the artist --I just love this piece of work!! I just acquired a watercolor with a note on the back that states the artist is Eliza Hole with the dates London 1827-1831. The painting is of a trochilus, the longtailed green hummingbird from Jamica. Does anyone know anything about this artist or where I could find out about her?

I just did a quick Google search and found out that she has retired from teaching workshops...as of '98. There were hundreds of items about Jeanne Dobie and I just looked at the first few entries. I'm sure you can find out more if you do an internet search...perhaps she still continues to teach her Florida Keys workshops. Good luck.

Two questions stemming from the purchase of my first watercolor, a landscape of the European Alps, in which pencil marks are visible when the artwork is viewed closely. (1) Do some artists intentionally leave pencil marks, or might this painting have been a "work in progress"? (2) Can anyone provide information about the artist, who signed "B. Manz" in the lower right. I could find no date, but there is a title, presumably in German (perhaps "Hut bir Kitzbuhl") on the back. From its condition, I assume the painting is <50 years old. I have a watercolor that is signed in 1914 by a J. F. Canham. It is of a oasis scene on the desert with palm trees and some camels and nomads. It is quite beautiful but want to know if anyone has ever heard of this artist? Thank you

I advise anyone with a painting by an unknown artist to go to your local library first. Look at the Benezit or old volumes of Who's Who in Art (American versions)and old volumes of magazines on art. There is also an art periodical reference series which can be helpful. Library staff live to research and see a grateful smile, so feel free to ask. You may be rewarded with a valuable painting or at least an interesting story to tell about the painting on your wall. You can also go to galleries which sell paintings similar in age and/or style to the one you're researching.

Regardless of authorship or provenance, paintings are often worth plenty because of their beauty, subject matter or age. Name of artist is not the only determinant of value. I once had a couple of Hogarth engravings which only brought a couple of hundred each, because they were from the early part of his career when he was doing "hack" work to keep alive. Later works with social commentary or scenes of public debauchery bring thousands.

I am searching for information regarding the art of Hans Axel Walleen. Specifically, I'd like to know names and dates of paintings. I recently inherited two of his watercolors, but have been unable to identify them.

Here is background information I have been able to obtain: Mr. Walleen was born in Malmo, Sweden in 1902. He immigrated from Sweden in 1906 and spent most of his life in New York and Connecticut. He was an illustrator of children's books as well as an artist. Mr. Walleen was a long-time member of AWS as well as its past-president from 1957-59. Mr. Walleen participated in the 92nd Annual Exhibition of the American Watercolor Society at the National Academy of Design in New York City in 1959. He exhibited in London and in museums and galleries, at the Salmagundi Club in New York City, and in Chicago. He retired to Connecticut. He died while visiting his daughter in Spain in February, 1978.

In the early 80s, in Chicago I bought several works including; "Royal Potato Toss", "The Coin Flipper" and, "Modes of Transportation". I even had the opportunity to visit his studio to choose a piece. The annual exhibit that I always saw him at moved venues and became very difficult for me to get to. I'd hate to think that I have lost the chance to enhance my life with more of his works.

My Mother gave me a water color nude that she got for a wedding present in 1939. It is a pastel of a women laying across a bed with a scarf draped over her abdomen. Her breasts are uncovered. I have a print of a Venetian scene.There's architecture on the right; trees on the left; water flowing between, toward the foreground.The background shows blue and white skies with vegetation below. It is #3 of 60. The signature appears to say Revillon.There isn't a loop in the second (L).So,I'm not sure if it is Revillon.I've discovered that Whistler had a great nephew named Jos.Whistler Revillon who was the Executor of his estate.Whistler's early work included Venetian etchings.Any connections?HELP!!

I have an old lithograph print that was given to me 30 years ago by my mother-in-law. It was given to her when she was around 8 years old in 1915. It is entitled "The Sewing Circle", no artist's name is recorded. I have searched in major cities' libraries and museums, antique shops specializing in art, and online to no avail. I think it might have been an old calendar print. The faces on the five ladies in the picture show great character, some are wearing hats or prayer caps. There is a religious picture on the back wall of the picture. Does anyone have any clues? Thank you.

I have a folder of prints by Jean-Paul Alaux entitled Tahiti Visions Japonaises. There are 12 prints of his water colors in the folder which is #77 of a total of 400 folders printed. I would be interested in knowing the fair market value of these prints, and possibly selling them.

I have two paintings (I am pretty sure they are oil paint), that I would like to know about how much each is worth. The first one is called "Late October" signed by artist Franklin M Hamilton.

The second one (also oil paint), has a signature also but small and I can't make it out. Anyways the painting is named Retribution.

I Have come across 3 watercolor/ink drawings but can not figure out the artists name. It is signed Meism and I think the last four letters are dolf. Meismdolf?? It also says new Orleans 76 ns. They are paintings of musicians. Very beautiful. Any help would be appreciated.

I recently purchesed a watercolor dated 1949. On the back is a seal from the T. Eaton Co of Montreal. With a serial number.
The picture depicts two children kissing behind a sheet hanging from a clothes line. Another child (girl) is standing beside them, cheeks red with jealousy. It's titled Jealous on the bottom left hand corner. The painter's name is faded and cannot be read.
Any help would be appreciated.
