Kofi Annan, Secretary-General, United Nations “…a splendid example of how the universal language of art can cross boundaries and barriers, bringing nations together to promote greater understanding among peoples and cultures.” HRH The Prince of Wales “We can all learn a great deal about our world by looking at it through the independent and perceptive eyes of artists.” “Our World in the year 2000” features winning and selected paintings from The Winsor & Newton Worldwide Millennium Painting Competition, which attracted over 22,000 entries from amateur and professional artists from 51 countries. It is the largest art event of its kind ever held. The international judging for the competition and awards ceremony for the winning artists from around the world were carried out under the patronage of HRH The Prince of Wales at St James’s palace, London. The UN Secretary-General, who is Patron of this exhibition, has selected it as the official United Nations Millennium Art Exhibition. Both the Secretary-General and HRH The Prince of Wales, together with Carol Bellamy, Executive Director of UNICEF, have contributed Forwards to the exhibition catalogue, which will be sold at the United Nations in aid of UNICEF. The overall winner of the competition was Ramon Piaguaje, a Secoya Indian artist from the Amazon rainforest in Ecuador. The Exhibition is from 9.00a.m. – 5.00p.m. daily from 12th July – 28th August 2000 at The United Nations Building, 1st Ave and 46th St. New York One of the Irish winning entries can be seen at www.swv.ie/artroger.
