About Roger Bonnette I was born and raised in Marietta, Ohio. I attribute much of my subject matter to the everyday experiences I've had as I was growing up. My father was an avid outdoorsman and my mother a very dedicated homemaker and gentle caregiver to me and my four brothers and sisters. My paintings in turn reflect a love of nature and children.
When I was in grade school, my art teacher noticed my unique talents and encouraged my creative abilities. I later attended Glenville State College on a football scholarship. It was hard for many people to believe that a rugged athlete could also be a skilled artist. I received high honors from the State of West Virginia for my athletic abilities. During this time, I also trained under the direction of Mr. Charles Scott, an artist in his own right. He taught me much of what I know today about watercolor painting.
My approach to painting is one of realism. I incorporate most every technique used in watercolors in my painting, from the spontaneous washes to the intricate details of a very fine brush. Whether it is a colorful fall scene, an elk roaming the snowcapped mountains, or a child picking a flower, these techniques are used in most every painting.
Soon after graduation from Glenville, I participated in several art shows in Ohio and West Virginia. In January, 1988, I married Katherine Starkey. After taking a break to help with the incredible task of raising two babies, I resumed painting and discovered an even greater satisfaction for my God given artistic ability.
