WATERCOLOR PAINTINGS

As a child and young adult I painted in many mediums. I however, I went into speech pathology as a profession and have practiced for more than 25 years. I retired May, 2001 from full time practice to paint full time. I never got over the need to create, and after many years of not painting at all [20 to be exact] in 1994, I again took brush in hand to attempt again to paint. I joined an art group and have been very lucky in winning several competetions. Painting saves my sanity, when all else is going wrong in my life, I can lose myself in the work on my painting table. I realized a long time ago that there are only a few of us that we would make our living from our art. However, no matter how good, or bad, our art is wonderful to us. To our family and friends who place our work on the walls of their homes. To them we are very special artists. Art is a pleasure to the eye and it is very subjective. After my first "Best of Show", my heart was bursting with pride, when an older lady came to me and spoke. I told her that I had just won the first and best of show awards....she turned to me and said "Wonderful dear, but you know it IS just one persons opinion". My pride went in the dump,... however, those words have carried me through those many times that I thought my paintings were really very good and I sold nothing or won not one award ribbon....it is afterall, just one person's opinion. I think what I am trying to say is.... paint for yourself, for your pleasure, and if you win an award here and there good, but if you never do win, or never sell one painting remember that you have had the enjoyment of creating. You have created something that did not exist before and that is a special gift. You have pleased yourself and that is the important thing.
