Susan paints in a realistic style and chooses subjects that capture the mood of Caribbean life. Flower portraits range from delicate orchids to vibrant Heliconias, bursting with life. Her still life arrangements emphasize the values of a simpler life-style; fresh air, fresh food, hand-made pottery, traditional utensils and sparkling sunlight. Nearly five years into her painting career, Susan has included some nautical and underwater themes from her past and some spiritual ideas from a present and ongoing quest for personal growth. These special pieces include gold work and calligraphic motifs and symbols, in an age old tradition, given a new flavour.

About the Artist

Susan has been painting full-time since 1997, starting with self-study and the inspiring guidance of sculptress and painter, Jannette Eyles. The lush environment of rural Jamaica, where she lives, has provided ample motivation to express the beauty of nature.

Susan tries to draw the viewer into the world within the picture frame. "The play of light across a subject is spellbinding. I want the viewer to spend at least one moment fully present to the experience - just you and the picture..." Susan has shown two solo exhibitions at Round Hill Hotel and participated in many joint shows. Her work can be seen at Coyaba Resort, Mobay Hope, Decor Gallery and private collections in Jamaica, England, USA and Europe. Web sites include: www.galleryofwestindianart.com and www.thomasbarclay.com.

All materials used are professional quality: lightfast watercolours on archival, acid-free paper. Spiritual pieces may include acrylic gold, gouache or 22Kt gold leaf.

By Commission

A portrait of your child can be painted, by commission, in a choice of sizes, formats and moods. We discuss these options before an initial photo session, and then meet to review the photos, so that the personality of the subject is accurately expressed. A portrait makes an excellent surprise gift for a special occasion, so please bear in mind that the painting takes about three weeks to complete and the framing another two weeks. Naturally this will take longer if done by correspondence. A deposit is due at the start of work and the balance on completion of the painting. Call me for further information, or an interview at my studio.
